(outdated) My Home Network Topology

Note: This post is outdated. I’ve since modified my topology. When using Proxmox, VLAN configuration requires placing Proxmox on the Management VLAN while bridging the Server VLAN for containers and VMs. TrueNAS should follow a similar approach with Docker containers bridged on the Server VLAN. The WAPs now broadcast the Guest Network instead of using a dedicated WAP, primarily due to performance issues with the isolated setup.

I wanted to share my home network setup and offer some tips for anyone implementing VLANs for the first time.

Getting Started

I had experience designing networks in Packet Tracer, but doing it for real is a different story — especially when you realize how easy it is to lock yourself out without a console cable handy. The project took a lot longer than I expected.

Plan thoroughly before you start. I already had servers and WAPs in place but wanted to improve security and performance. I used an older WAP specifically for guest network isolation to maintain hardware separation as a safety measure.

Managed Switch

The most challenging part was configuring the managed switch. I didn’t know the default IP and had to dig out the manual before I could access the web UI. My 2.5Gbps switch was budget-friendly but had a confusing interface. I’d recommend TP-Link managed switches for their cleaner UI. I haven’t fully utilized the 2.5Gbps bandwidth except during local media file transfers.

Wireless Access Points

TP-Link WAPs were straightforward to set up, especially for VLAN configuration.

Tips

  • Keep the switch physically accessible for quick factory resets
  • Maintain reliable backups before making changes
  • Enable DHCP on each VLAN initially to verify connectivity, then switch to static IPs after
  • Use a patch panel with proper labeling so you can configure servers remotely
  • Create link-local connections for PC-to-PC communication when needed

VLAN implementation depends heavily on your hardware. Feel free to reach out if you have questions or want to share your own setup.
